As Brazil prepares to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics two years later, a big clean up is underway. But getting to the rubbish to remove it from the hillsides of the favelas isn’t always easy.
Rajan Datar joined a team of refuse collectors whose job it is to abseil down Rio’s hills to collect what others have left behind. Sometimes they make some grim discoveries. Here you see what some rubbish collectors have to go through to make the city a cleaner place.
